Himalayan Foothills

Himalayan foothills are spread over North India from Jammu through the Kangra valley, stretching from the Sirmaur district to Dehradun, and finally to the Bhabbar tracks of Garhwal and Kumaon. Away from the hustle and bustle of urbanized cities, these valleys are precious, cherished gifts of Mother Nature to us.

The valleys which lie between the Shivaliks and the greater Himalayas are known as Dun valleys. A prime example of one such valley is the serene Dehradun the capital city of the northern state of Uttaranchal. Until a few years ago, the hills found along the Doon valley was replete with acacia and pine trees. However, things are much different now owing to the compelling need for development and urbanization.

Although many regions in Himalayan foothills have become relatively safer to travel, it continues to be a substantial threat to the visitors. Most of these destinations, especially Dehradun, provide tourists with ample opportunities to participate in adrenaline pumping activities like skiing, trekking, camping, mountaineering, Para gliding etc. They can also take advantage of water-based sports like kayaking, rowing, canoeing, river rafting, fishing etc. Some of the many important tourist spots in this area include Robber’s cave, Rajaji National Park, Tapovan, Kalanga monument, Asan Barrage, Sahastradhara etc.

One of the finest wildlife sanctuaries in India, the Corbett National Park, is also located at the foothills of Himalayas in the state of Uttaranchal. In addition to a variety of wildlife species, the endangered Bengal Tigers, crocodiles and leopards are the special attractions of this park. The Park also confounds tourists with its enchanting natural beauty.

Situated just a few hours’ drive away from the park is the beautiful Nainital, one of the most loved hill stations in India. It has everything that you’d wanted to see in a hill station- soothing climate, lush green vegetation, majestic mountains, beautiful lakes, scenic surroundings and friendly people. Popular attractions include Naini Lake, Naini peak, Bhim Tal and Snow View Point.

The Himalayan foothills have many things to offer to the tourists arriving from all parts of the world. While some of these places give the outwardly appearance of being rugged, each one of them has its own endearing charm which captivates one and all. This is why majority of the tourists visiting the places keep coming back for more! Be it leisure holidays, religious holidays or adventurous sports, every one treasures their visit to the Himalayan Foothiils and take back lifelong memories to cherish.
